How Wager Walk Started…

I’ve always wanted to stay active, or at least semifit. Walking always felt like the easiest way to do that. Nothing crazy, just throw in some steps and feel better about yourself at the end of the day. You hear trainers all the time saying “get in 10k or 15k steps,” and for a while, I thought I was doing that no problem.

I used to be on my feet a lot at work, moving around job sites, constantly on the go. But eventually I moved into a more supervisory role. I was still out there, just not walking as much, more observing than doing lol (my foremen know how that goes). And that’s when the weight started creeping in. Late night snacks probably didn’t help either 😅

When I got my first Apple Watch, I figured I’d see 12–15k steps a day easily. But tbh I wasn’t even hitting 7k most days. So I started challenging myself to get to 10k daily. For a couple weeks, it worked. I felt good. But like everything else, I lost motivation and kind of stopped caring. Honestly when you got a full time job life just kind of takes the wheel and you tend to forget about health, at least me anyways and I knew all my friends were in the same boat.

One day, I was talking with my buddies about it and found out they were trying to walk more too, but none of us were sticking with it. So I had this thought, what if we threw some money on it? Like, turn it into a friendly wager between us?

So 4 of us put in $10 each. Whoever had the most steps at the end of the week won the $40 pot. That first week was wild. We were trash talking, checking our watches constantly, taking extra walks at night. It brought that spark back.

Fast forward three months. I’d lost 10 pounds without changing anything else. My buddies were dropping weight too, and we’d started pulling in other friends and family.

The unexpected part was that everyone was winning at some point, and everyone was getting paid here and there. That little $30 or $40 win would hit just right. Fill up your tank, grab some extra groceries, or even just help you justify that fat Netflix monthly charge 😆. It was honestly one of the few things I’d tried that felt fun, sustainable, and actually made a difference.

That’s when it hit me, why isn’t this an app? Why can’t anyone, anywhere just do this any time?

So after about six more months of doing it the old school way and saving up some money, me and the guys pooled together what we had and found someone to build the first version of Wager Walk.

And now... here we are.

We made this for people like us who want to move a little more, challenge their friends, and maybe make a few extra bucks doing it. Hopefully Wager Walk gives you that same push it gave us, because honestly, it's been a lot of fun and rewarding. My gut sure appreciates it lol.

Thanks for being here everyone. Go get those steps in.
